Having Fun: The Way You Should Work

The importance of combining work with play.

In a world where technology has become a disruption that has transformed the paradigm of work, the how, why, when, and why of work has changed dramatically. Job seekers are now looking for jobs that go beyond meeting only their material needs. Many of them want flexibility in their work and the ability to work remotely or from home. The notion of career stability as the ultimate goal has given way to a desire of changing jobs frequently to move from a monotone environment to a more challenging and dynamic one or to gain more useful and new skills. The excitement of a dynamic and vibrant working environment is what people are looking for now. These great changes in the way work is perceived have birthed the concept of workplace fun.

In the past, work, was, well……… WORK. It was all about dodged efficiency with little to no room for breaks or banter among colleagues, or it’s considered a taboo. We kind off mellowed out from there. We socialize during breaks, have a smoke or drinks with colleagues, and have a little gossip at the water cooler. Alas, even these interactions were still on the side of stiff formality without the sense of relaxation one would expect from such activities. It’s only in the past few decades that organizations and business leaders have recognized that we are social beings. We strive and work well in an engaging, interactive, fun working environment.

Workplace fun is becoming a form of competitive advantage. But what exactly is it?

Workplace fun is not just on the surface or a one-off. It is embedding the element of fun into the work environment. It is about building a work environment that is nurturing at its core, ripe with growth opportunities for the employees, a great support system in the management, and leadership that you can look up to. Organizations that want to retain and have a satisfied and driven workforce should foster and create a work environment that not only strives toward efficiency but also looks into the human element; a work environment that is fun!
